After debuting at number one on the straight-to-DVD sales charts (and number five overall) for the week ending February 7th, 2010, Planet Hulk maintained the number one slot in its second week of release (dropping to 16 overall).  After a north of $2 million bow, Hulk tacked on enough sales the following week to break $3 million.  Last year’s Hulk Vs. DVD opened to $3 million and went on to gross $6.5 million.

Planet Hulk Reviews: “A Must Buy”

planet_hulk_small

Early reviews are in for Planet Hulk, the latest animated feature from the Marvel Universe, in which our green friend gets dispatched to an alien world where he lives out the plot to Gladiator (or Spartacus, if you prefer).  Valkor over at The Other View calls it a “must buy” calling the action “f*cking tight and no holds barred” and the animation “frickin sweet!”  Kofi Outlaw at Screen Rant is equally impressed:

“In the end, Planet Hulk — like last year’s Hulk Vs. feature — showcases the big green guy doing what he does best (SMASHING THINGS!) this time on a scale that is both imaginative and pretty awesome to behold.”

DrHideous at MoviesOnline is less full-throated in his support, lamenting the downplay of more interesting side characters and growing frustrated with the archetypal plot, “There’s not a single scene in the movie where you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen.”  Still, he praises the disc extras and concludes that, for Hulk and Marvel fans, the film is “certainly worth checking out.”

Planet Hulk arrives Tuesday.
